product drivers.

Depending on what kind of device you wish to use your UltiMate GPS accessory with, you might need a driver. Please refer to the list below to find out if you need a driver.

iPod touch, iPhone and iPad

Your UltiMate GPS accessory is plug-and-play if you are using an iPod touch, iPhone or iPad (further referred to as "iPod").

Simply plug the accessory into your iPod, start up your GPS application and you are ready to go. Just make sure you allow the GPS application that you are using to use your location services. You can double check if an application is allowed to use your location by going to the main "Settings" menu on your iPod. Then press on "Location Services", locate the application your are using and make sure the blue switch is in the "ON" position.

In order to take full advantage of the features of your UltiMate GPS accessory, it is recommended that you install Emprum's UltiMate GPS App on your iPod. A full manual for the UltiMate GPS App can be found here.

Mac and Linux computers

Mac and Linux computers do not require a driver. The UltiMate GPS accessory will be directly recognized by your computer and show up in your /dev directory as a USB serial port. This port can then be accessed the normal way any other serial port would be accessed on a Mac and Linux computer.

Windows computers

Windows computers require the installation of the UltiMate GPS UM3993 driver which can be downloaded here (please click on "here"). This driver works on all versions of Windows, including Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Unzip the downloaded file to a location on your computer (e.g. your Desktop) and follow the steps below to install the Windows driver. The instructions below are specifically outlined for Windows XP, but are very similar for Windows Vista and Windows 7.

  1. After you have connected your UltiMate GPS accessory to your computer with the included USB cable, wait for about 5-10secs.
  2. After the Windows Hardware Wizard opens, select the Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) option and click Next.
If the Windows Hardware Wizard does not open on its own (e.g. on Windows 7), you can manually start it from a command prompt by entering Hdwwiz.exe. In order to do this, you will need Administrator privileges.
Alternatively, you can open the Control Panel and then the Device Manager and you should see an unrecognized device in the list of hardware. Right click on this device and select the option to Install or Update the driver for this device.
  3. Next you will manually select the driver instead of having your computer search for it. Choose the Don't search. I will choose the driver to install option and click Next.
  4. On the Select hardware screen, select Ports (COM & LPT) as the hardware type, then click on Next.
  5. Click on Have Disk and point the Hardware Wizard to the unzipped Emprum_UM3993-A.inf file. Click Open and then click OK.
  6. Click Next to install the driver.
  7. A message will appear that the UM3993 UltiMate GPS driver has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows. This message can be safely ignored (the driver uses the Windows usbser.sys driver that is standard included with Windows and does not install any new drivers). Click on Continue Anyway and wait for the installation to finish. Click Finish.
  8. A reboot of your computer might be required after the driver installation finishes.
  9. To check the installation, open up the Device Manager and expand the Ports (COM & LPT) line.
  10. Check that there is a line present that says UM3993 UltiMate GPS (COMxx) where xx is a number that the operating system has assigned to the UltiMate GPS accessory.
  11. The COM port settings can be changed under the Properties tab of the UM3993 UltiMate GPS (COMxx) line item. Right click and select Properties.
  12. Click on the Port Settings tab and change the baudrate Bits per second to 57600. Data bits should be set to 8, Parity to None, Stop bits to 1 and Flow control to None.
  13. You can optionally change the COM port number by clicking on Advanced and selecting the desired COM Port Number. This may require a reboot of your computer.
You can now use the UltiMate GPS accessory with any PC-based software that can read standard NMEA sentences from a serial port.

If you do a Google search, you can find many free NMEA readers. One application that you can use is VisualGPS. A free version can be downloaded here.

Install the application and start it up. Next connect to your UltiMate GPS accessory by choosing the Connect to GPS menu option, then selecting Connect using serial port. Select the appropriate COM port and set the baudrate to 57600 and you are ready to go.
